Report: Rooney Rule could apply to coordinators in the future

The NFL has specific measures in mind to expand the scope of the league's Rooney Rule, according to a report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Mortensen reports that the rule, which currently only applies to senior-level positions in football operations, could be expanded to include assistant coaches like defensive and offensive coordinators.

The move comes a few days after the league's head of human resources decried that, of all the vacant head coaching positions that have popped up in the league this offseason, none were filled by minority candidates.

The Rooney Rule, named for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ owner Dan Rooney, requires all NFL teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coaching and senior football operation positions. Currently, there are only four minority head coaches in the NFL: Ron Rivera with the Carolina Panthers, Leslie Frazier of the Minnesota Vikings, Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Marvin Lewis of the Cincinnati Bengals.
