The Dallas Cowboys have hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator and former St. Louis Rams head coach Scott Linehan to call their offensive plays, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Monday.
According to the report, Linehan was brought in for an interview and hired Monday. The Cowboys were so certain that they were going to hire Linehan, according to Rapoport, that he was a part of team meetings on Monday.
Citing a source close to Cowboys offensive coordinator Bill Callahan, Rapoport reported that he would be "annoyed" if Linehan were hired. His hire means the Cowboys will have had three offensive play-callers in as many seasons.
Linehan has extensive ties with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. As the Miami Dolphins coordinator in 2005, Linehan hired Garrett to be the team's quarterbacks coach. Linehan also unsuccessfully attempted to hire Garrett as the Rams' offensive coordinator when he became the team's head coach.
