Manchester United forward Robin van Persie is expected to be out for a significant period of time with a right ankle injury, the club announced

Van Persie was injured during the club’s 2-1 loss to Swansea City last Saturday, but finished the match because United had used all of their substitutions. Van Persie was seen leaving the stadium on crutches and a protective boot on his right foot.

He will at least miss matches against Sunderland on Saturday, a March 4 fixture against Newcastle United and the FA Cup quarterfinal against Arsenal on March 9.

“He [Robin] is the only injured player. He has an ankle injury. We have to wait and see how long that shall take,” Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said. “It's not heavy but it's not one or two weeks."

Van Persie is club’s leading scorer with 10 goals and two assists in 26 games in the Premier League and with the Dutch national team this season.

Manchester United is fourth in the Premier League this season, one point behind Arsenal for third place and 13 points behind leader Chelsea.
