Rémi Garde will be the new manager of Aston Villa, the team announced Monday.

Garde’s contract will keep him with the team through the 2018–19 season.

Garde previously coached French club Lyon, which competes in Ligue 1. He led the team to Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions titles in 2012. Garde won or drew 86 of his 117 games with Lyon.

Aston Villa sacked previous manager Tim Sherwood in October after the club lost six consecutive league games. Aston Villa finished in 17th place in the Premier League last season, narrowly avoiding relegation.

“Finding a manager who shares and believes our vision and has the ability to bring it to life through performances on the pitch is essential,” Aston Villa chief executive Tom Fox said in a statement. “We are confident that Rémi is the manager who can deliver the best from the current squad and help set the club up for future success.”
