Former Man Utd Star Turned Manager Set for Ajax Return After Missing Out on Premier League Promotion
Despite insisting that he would remain at Reading next season even though the club missed out on promotion back to the Premier League, manager Jaap Stam could be set for a sensational return to Ajax this summer.
The Dutch giants have found themselves without a manager after Borussia Dortmund announced Peter Bosz would be succeeding Thomas Tuchel at the helm at the Westfallenstadion next season. The Daily Mailhas reported that Stam could return to Amsterdam just one year after leaving to manage Reading.
The hunt for a new manager in Holland is currently being led by another former Manchester United player, Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar. The ex-United duo could be reunited in Amsterdam at the club that both players spent time playing for during their career.
Stam narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League with Reading in the Championship play-off final against Huddersfield, with the game being decided by a penalty shoot-out.
Reading looked like they were set for promotion after Michael Hefele's penalty was saved by the Royals goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi. In an incredible turnaround, however, Liam Moore and Jordan Obita both missed their penalties for Reading and Huddersfield's German defender Christopher Schindler put the game to bed.
Ajax have also identified current youth coach Marcel Keizer, former Dutch international Clarence Seedorf and Bayer Leverkusen boss Roger Schmidt as potential candidates to take over at the Amsterdam Arena.
