Gary Neville has provoked Liverpool fans with a sly dig at the status of the club on Twitter.

The former Manchester United defender regularly engages in exchanges with fellow pundit Jamie Carragher on social media, which often boil down to a rivalry between the duo's former clubs.

This time, however, Neville wasn't attempting to irritate Carragher, but instead Matt Le Tissier, the ex-Southampton midfielder now best known for his Soccer Saturday punditry.

Le Tissier had responded to criticism that "no big clubs ever came in" for him during his prime. "True, turned down Liverpool though surely that counts," he wrote in reply.

Neville couldn't resist the temptation to weigh in with a somewhat predictable, but no less effective, dig at Liverpool.

"He said Big clubs Matt," wrote Neville, followed by a winking emoji to perhaps lessen some of the inevitable fury coming his way from Liverpool supporters.

"Now now Gary that's just asking for trouble!!" Le Tissier said.

And, as expected, the comments were soon full of vitriol between fans of both United and Liverpool.
