England’s Goalkeeper Options—Ranked

There’s a famous old Nike advert which features Paolo Maldini and the tagline: "Italy's Goalkeeper: Easiest Job in Europe."
Unfortunately for England, they don’t have Maldini marshalling the defence, so it matters greatly who they have between the sticks.
Jordan Pickford has the No. 1 spot between the Three Lions’s sticks locked down since 2018, but there is renewed competition for the gloves as Thomas Tuchel looks to build his next team leading up to Euro 2028 on home soil.
What Is Tuchel Looking for in a Keeper?
The modern goalkeeper should not only be a very good shot-stopper but also the first part of the attack, able to initiate buildup play with fine technique, pinpoint accuracy and steely nerves under pressure.
Distribution is now one of the main things assessed when it comes to picking rosters, especially for those teams—like England—expected to dominate possession against most opponents they face.
Aerial dominance at corners and set pieces, a commanding presence as a defensive organizer and a strong penalty saving ratio are also nice-to-haves for any England keeper, too.

England’s Goalkeepers—Ranked
5. James Beadle
One for the future, 22-year-old James Beadle has been a regular for the England Under-21s since 2024.
He made the Team of the Tournament as the Young Lions won UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2025 and is steadily impressing on at Birmingham City in the Championship, where he is currently on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.
He will, however, need to make the step up to the Premier League (or one of Europe’s top divisions) at some point soon to be considered a serious option.
4. Nick Pope
Once the strongest challenger to Pickford’s throne, Nick Pope’s stock has fallen in recent seasons after some error-strewn displays.
He split No. 1 duty at Newcastle with Aaron Ramsdale in the 2025–26 season and has been usurped by new signing Lukáš Horníček and is yet to feature this season.
At the age of 34, the 6’6 stopper is unlikely to add to his ten caps unless there is a serious injury crisis, but it’s possible he could still work his way back into the picture if he were to move clubs and rediscover his best form.
3. Dean Henderson
After making a permanent move to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2023, Dean Henderson endured a difficult start to life in London.
A serious thigh injury limited his appearances early on, and he spent much of the 2023–24 campaign battling Sam Johnstone for the No. 1 spot at Selhurst Park.
However, Johnstone’s injury setback and eventual departure gave the former Manchester United man a clear path to become Palace’s first-choice keeper—and he hasn’t looked back since. Henderson shone throughout the club’s remarkable FA Cup triumph in 2024–25, and he played a major role in Palace’s historic Conference League victory last season.
He has an impressive record of 12 penalty saves from 34 faced.
2. James Trafford
After a record-breaking Championship season with Burnley, James Trafford was widely expected to kick on and become England’s first-choice goalkeeper, especially after a move to Manchester City. However, the subsequent surprise signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma halted that progress, with Trafford instantly demoted to cup keeper.
He did keep clean sheets in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup finals last season and earned a move to Leeds, where he is shining as the No. 1.
An unused sub at the 2026 World Cup, Trafford feels destined to eventually inherit the England role and has impressed when called up by Tuchel.
1. Jordan Pickford
Pickford remains a somewhat polarizing figure among England fans, with the Everton goalkeeper long criticized for occasional high-profile errors.
However, in recent seasons, Pickford has significantly cut down on those mistakes and developed into a consistent and dependable presence for both Everton and England.
He was Gareth Southgate’s undisputed No. 1 and rarely let the Three Lions down. He remains Tuchel’s top choice too, for now.
