Sunderland have very much adopted a data-driven approach these days, and there is something of a statistics obsession within football in general right now.

Once upon a time, goals were about the only measure, then they brought in assists too. Now, we have 'goal contributions' as part of the furniture as well.

Jack Clarke has led the way for Sunderland in that sense this season. He has 20 to his name and it's been an incredibly impressive campaign for the youngster.

Are there any former Sunderland players performing too this season, though? Here’s five players who have hit double figures for goals and assists.

Josh Maja

The former Sunderland striker has 13 goals and five assists for Bordeaux this season.

Maja was sold to Bordeaux from Sunderland in 2019 and has since had largely unsuccessful loan spells at Fulham and Stoke City. He seems to have finally rediscovered his goal scoring touch in Ligue 2, though.

Just in time for his next move as well. How convenient.

Fabio Borini

Fabio Borini

Former Sunderland winger Borini now plays in Turkey for Karagumruk. So far this season Borini has played 26 times and scored 17 goals with a further nine assists to his name.

The Italian international joined the Turkish outfit in 2021 from Hellas Verona and has scored 29 goals in 67 appearances in total, as well as contributing 12 assists.

Bali Mumba

Mumba left Sunderland at the age of 19 having made 10 appearances for the club. It's still annoying.

The England under-19 international joined Norwich in 2020 and has had successful loan spells at Peterborough and now Plymouth.

Mumba, who predominately plays as a left back for Plymouth, has made 37 appearances so far this season and scored and assisted six apiece for the side that currently sits first in League One.

Josh Hawkes

Josh Hawkes

Hawkes played most of his football on Wearside in the under-23 team but did make three appearances for Sunderland’s first team.

In 2022, Hawkes was released from his contract and joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old has played 41 times for Tranmere this season with nine goals to his name. He also has three assists for the League Two club so far this season.

Nathan Broadhead

Many fans wanted Broadhead to return to the Stadium of Light in the Summer but the then Everton striker moved to Wigan Athletic instead.

The Welshman played 22 times for Wigan and scored five goals before he was recalled by Everton then sold on to League One side Ipswich Town.

Since joining the Tractor Boys Broadhead has six goals and assisted four more in 15 games, with his total for the season over the two clubs standing at 11 goals and four assists. Broadhead also scored in Wales’ 1-1 draw with Croatia in March.
