Tony Mowbray paid tribute to the Sunderland fans following the FA Cup defeat to Fulham, calling them ‘amazing.’

Sunderland lost 3-2 at the Stadium of Light against the Premier League side, although they were roared on from the stands by the 30,000 inside the ground.

Even at the final whistle, the ground started singing their support for the players, and Mowbray says it is certainly not going unnoticed or unappreciated.

“I don’t want to keep repeating this but the fans are amazing,” Mowbray told safc.com.

“I’ve said to the players afterwards, the fans would cheer and roar a tackle as well as a brilliant bit of skill and dribbling. They want to see you fighting for the cause and the jersey and I think the players are buying into that.

“I haven’t seen the last few years of the club, I’ve been working elsewhere. But I hope they feel we’re a team that’s fighting for every ball and working really hard.

“We are trying our best with the group we’ve got to give ourselves a fighting chance and that’s all we can try to do.

“If they can keep supporting us, which has been amazing home and away, hopefully I can keep driving the players and they can keep finding the energy levels to give the fans something they can cheer about.”
