There are a number of notable players to play for both Sunderland and Bristol City, such as Marcus Stewart and Stern John, but it would be rude to not feature Bailey Wright here.

Wright is still contracted to Sunderland and very popular he is too, although he is spending the rest of the season at Rotherham.

The Australian started his career by signing a two-year scholarship with Preston North End in 2009 at the age of 17.

He spent eight years at Preston accumulating 205 appearances and 38 yellow cards, as well as scoring eight goals.

Wright then moved to Bristol City in 2017 on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The centre back made 83 appearances over four seasons at Bristol City before moving to Sunderland on loan in 2020.

Following a successful loan spell Wright joined Sunderland on a two-year contract and at the end of last season he signed a two-year extension on Wearside.

Away from club football Wright has got 28 caps and two goals for Australia including an appearance at the 2022 World Cup.

Most of Wright's appearances amassed at Sunderland were made in League One but he was vital during the Black Cats promotion campaign in 2022.

During his 107 appearances at the club, Wright has helped keep 40 clean sheets while the team only conceded 0.86 goals per game with the Aussie at the heart of the defence.

Wright also scored four times for the club, with his goals coming against Wigan, Cheltenham, Sheffield Wednesday and Wimbledon.

However, he was never much of a threat in the opposition box. Wright only scored once whilst playing for Bristol City, a 78th minute equaliser against Norwich back in 2017.

Wright, who played many times under former Sunderland boss Lee Johnson, had some great nights for Bristol City.

He played 90 minutes in the EFL Cup as Bristol knocked out Premier League Crystal Palace, winning 4-1. In the next round Wright captained his side to a 2-1 victory over Premier League giants Manchester United.

Wright once again captained the side in both legs of the semi-finals against Manchester City, but Bristol City narrowly lost both legs losing 2-1 at the Etihad and 3-2 at Ashton Gate.

Bailey Wright best Sunderland moment

It may be difficult to pinpoint Wright's best moment sticks in the mind more than any other.

Following a particularly competitive - and crucial - play-off semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday, a warrior-like Wright was seen shedding blood for Sunderland. It surprised no one.
