Sunderland have announced today that youngster Harrison Jones has signed his first professional contract with the club.

The 18-year-old Jones pens a two-year contract with an option for a further year, becoming the latest in a string of recent Sunderland youth players to pen contracts with the club.

Speaking on Jones, academy boss Robin Nicholls said:

“We are very happy to see Harrison continue his journey with the Academy. He has been with the club for many years now and whilst the past few seasons have been disrupted through injury, we are confident that we can provide the right platform for Harrison to develop into the player that we know he can become.”

Jones joins the likes of Harry Gardiner, Ben Middlemas, Michael Spellman, and Marshall Burke in penning new deals at the club, with Newcastle United-linked Chris Rigg having put pen to paper on a two-year scholarship this week as well.

Moving on up...

There is such a feel-good mood around the club right now.

Things on the pitch went extremely well last season - much better than expected. And this summer, things off the pitch are going very well too, with the Black Cats wasting no time in adding players to their ranks, before getting to work on new contracts.

And the amount of players committing their immediate futures to the club tells us how positive of a place it is to be right now.

Sunderland and Tony Mowbray put a lot of trust in their younger players last season and it paid off, so it's no surprise to see their youth players wanting to stay at the club.

Expect to see some more in the coming days and weeks and Sunderland's summer transfer window goes from strength to strength.
