Everton are working on a deal to sign striker Youssef Chermiti from Sporting Lisbon, which could free up Tom Cannon to leave on loan.

Cannon, 20, has a number of suitors in the Championship with Sunderland being one of them.

The Irishman impressed on loan with Preston in the second half of last season and now a horde of clubs are lining up to sign him on loan, but whether or not he comes to Sunderland remains to be seen.

Whilst it looks like Cannon could leave on loan as Everton move in on Chermiti, The Northern Echo say that the Black Cats would prefer a permanent move for the player, whilst Everton would rather send him out on loan again.

The same report adds that the Toffees want a £1million loan fee for Cannon which could yet force Sunderland out of the race for his signature.

Sunderland now have a few strikers on their books in Ross Stewart, Eliezer Mayenda, and Luis Hemir, though only the latter is fit enough to start the 2023/24 season this weekend.

Cannon coming to Sunderland?

Cannon certainly fits the bill for Sunderland, though signing him looks like it'll be very difficult for the Black Cats.

How much more money they can spend this summer remains to be seen. They don't seem keen on loaning players unless they have to, and it doesn't look like Everton want to sell Cannon permanently.

But with Mayenda now injured along with Stewart, Tony Mowbray now finds himself desperately in need of strikers before the start of the new season this weekend.

There's still a month of the window left but Sunderland won't want to leave themselves short on attacking options like they did last summer.
