It really wasn’t a very good weekend for Sunderland with their defeat to Coventry, but how did the players out on loan get on?

There are five Sunderland first-teamers playing out the season at other clubs and four of them saw some action over the weekend.

The fifth, Bailey Wright, might get some minutes too when Rotherham play Swansea on Monday night.

How did the others do, though? Well, it was a real mixed bag.

Jay Matete

Jay Matete has had things largely his own way since joining Plymouth on loan in January, but he had a bit of a nightmare performance this weekend.

Matete started the Pilgrim’s game away at Peterborough in central midfield but he, along with most of the rest of their side, was completely overrun before falling to a 5-2 defeat.

He was hauled off after 71 minutes, with the only Plymouth player really emerging from the game with any credit being former Sunderland youngster Bali Mumba, who assisted both of their goals.

Leon Dajaku

St Gallen appear to be finding Leon Dajaku as confusing as Sunderland did.

The German started for them in their 4-0 away win against Sion, again taking up a central attacking midfield role behind two strikers.

He was taken off at half-time, although he did create the first goal. His fine attempted finish could only be parried by Sion goalkeeper Heinz Lindner and that allowed Chadrac Akolo to score on the rebound.

You can see the action below (Dajaku is the St Gallen number 77).

Carl Winchester

Shrewsbury recorded a very impressive 2-0 home win over League One play-off hopefuls Wycombe on Saturday, although Carl Winchester was not heavily involved.

He found himself dropped to the bench for the game and only got on the pitch in the 88th minute.

Former Sunderland defender Jordan Willis started the game for Wycombe, but it wasn’t a happy one for him.

In fact, he opened the scoring with an own-goal on the half hour.

Jack Diamond

Mark Kennedy and Duncan Ferguson were Merseyside rivals for a while as players and they met again this week, this time in opposing dugouts.

Jack Diamond played the full game for Kennedy’s Lincoln City but he was well short of his best form. In fact Lincoln in general struggled against League One basement club Forest Green Rovers.

The game finished 1-1 at the New Bolt Lawn – a result that benefitted Lincoln a lot more than it did their hosts.
