Sunderland loan watch: Leon Dajaku nightmare, Jay Matete gets birthday win

After a busy January transfer window, Sunderland have five players dotted about on loan at various clubs.
That can sometimes feel like a bit of an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ situation, but we’re going our best to keep our eye on them.
All five were in the matchday squads for their clubs’ matches this week, so how did they get on?
Leon Dajaku
Leon Dajaku has made a positive start at FC St Gallen, although he had a really tough weekend.
St Gallen travelled to table-topping Young Boys in positive mood after the 3-0 win over Servette last time out. Dajaku got his first start since his loan move from Sunderland in that one and registered an assist too.
He was in the starting line-up as a striker again and was St Gallen’s best performer, having four shots and created four chances. One of those shots was even from the halfway line.
Sadly, it was all in vain, with Young Boys dishing out a 5-1 hammering.
Jay Matete
Jay Matete has certainly impressed Plymouth fans since making the move to the South Coast, but he was dropped to the bench for the visit of Portsmouth despite it being his birthday.
He still got on the pitch, though, coming on in the 50th minute for Adam Randell.
Matete did okay and helped his side secure a 3-1 win, although he wasn’t as influential for Argyle as he has been.
Former Sunderland left-back Denver Hume did feature for Portsmouth, although only for the last five minutes.
Jack Diamond
Jack Diamond has made some real progress at Lincoln City and he was heavily involved against for the Imps in their 1-0 win over Bristol Rovers
He created the only goal of the game for Regan Poole with a brilliant cross whipped from deep into the back post.
You can watch it in the video below.
Bailey Wright
Bailey Wright suffered a concussion just 30 seconds into his Rotherham debut and it was touch and go whether he would be ready to feature against Blackpool this weekend.
However, Wright being Wright he shook off the concussion in the quickest possible time and he was back on the Millers’ bench.
The game finished 0-0 and he didn’t come on.
Carl Winchester
It is easy to forget that Carl Winchester is still a Sunderland player. For all intents and purposes, of course, he isn’t. He is simply playing out the last year of his contract at Shrewsbury.
He played in the centre of the Shrewsbury midfield in their 3-2 win over Port Vale, although he didn’t have a great game.
In fact, he played 77 minutes yet only completed nine passes. In fairness, as we saw in the FA Cup, Shrewsbury are a very direct team who don’t even look to play through midfield often.
