Sunderland have a couple of players in demand this summer, namely Jack Clarke and Dan Ballard.

The pair only signed for the club last summer (Clarke doing so after his initial loan spell in the 2021/22 season) but already, both players' futures are up in the air.

Clarke came into transfer headlines soon after the conclusion of last season following his impressive 2022/23 campaign, with Burnley seemingly making the most effort to sign him this summer with the Clarets having submitted bids for the 22-year-old.

Ballard meanwhile has become a target for West Ham despite an injury-hit first season at the Stadium of Light, with recent reports claiming that the Hammers are readying a bid for the Northern Ireland international.

But writing in a recent Q&A for Sunderland Echo, reporter Phil Smith revealed the Black Cats' position on potential sales of Clarke and Ballard this summer, saying:

"Speakman made clear last week that the club are not looking to sell players, and want to build a squad capable of pushing for promotion in the next couple of seasons.

"Both Clarke and Ballard are secured to long-term contracts and so it would take a huge offer for Sunderland to consider selling. As of yet, that has not happened.

"The Black Cats have rebuffed initial interest in Clarke and the winger is happy on Wearside off the back of an excellent campaign.

"West Ham United have been tracking Ballard as they look for more defensive depth, and have also been linked with a move for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.

"They have genuine interest but as with Clarke, it would take a huge bid to entice either club or player."

What next for Clarke and Ballard?

Sunderland's position seems clear - no player is for sale. But expect the Black Cats to have a price for both players, and if a team meets their price then the club may be tempted to cash in.

It's a natural part of being a Championship side but it would still be a blow for the Black Cats if they had to cash in on one of their key players ahead of next season.

Still, Premier League interest in their players is a credit to both their recruitment and to Tony Mowbray for helping to develop them.
