If you thought you couldn't love Luke O'Nien any more than you did already, he raised the bar even more against Bristol City.

Luke O’Nien picked up probably the best yellow card ever seen at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland drew 1-1 with Bristol City.

O’Nien is a player who learned the dark arts of football at Wycombe under Gareth Ainsworth, although he manages to get away with a lot of it by being an incredibly likable.

That was very much the case in the second half of the draw against the Robins, as he did a full-blown piggy-back on City attacker Alex Scott to prevent a breakaway.

The moment drew belly-laughs from those in attendance around the Stadium of Light, and it was certainly a unique piece of defending.

Well, almost unique, I should say, as former Sunderland midfielder Seb Larsson also once did something similar. It wasn’t quite as blatant when the Swede did it though.

Ultimately, it was probably a good decision as it stopped a dangerous Bristol City counter attack.

“The way I break down the game, I see it as I have to go out and make decisions,” O’Nien recently said. “I think me as a younger player here would have maybe not have adapted as well as I have now in some games.

“I’m not going to get it right all the time but I have really good people helping me.

“I just know that whatever position I play, the same with everybody, we just have to make the best decisions we can. If it goes wrong you move onto the next decision.

“I just keep trying to make better decisions for the team and when we get back to the training ground me and Veno (Sunderland assistant coach Mark Venus) will be watching the clips back, we talk about it as a team as well some of the clips and how we can improve.”
