What Georgia is Getting in Joseph Jonah-Ajonye

Kirby Smart and Tray Scott have landed yet another talented defensive lineman. Here’s what Joseph Jonah-Ajonye brings to the table.

July has been fun for Kirby Smart and his Bulldogs, as they have received big-time commitments in back-to-back days. Daniel Calhoun started the weekend off as Joseph Jonah-Ajonye followed him committing yesterday. Tray Scott and Kirby Smart will have plenty to work with in Jonah-Ajonye, so what is Georgia getting from him?

Jonah-Ajonye is a 4-star DL in the 2024 class, a top 10 player in Texas, and the sixth-best defensive lineman in the class according to 247Sports composite rankings. He earned this position with some excellent traits he already had as a high schooler.

Hands are an offensive and defensive lineman's best tool besides their size. The way Jonah-Ajonye uses his hands on the field is very refined. First, his hands are violent, and we see this with his ability to beat the OL to the point of contact first in many plays from his junior season film. This is key as a defensive lineman because it allows you to create separation between you and the OL, which lets you make plays more freely and disengage blocks quicker.  It's also worth noting that Jonah-Ajonye only began playing football his freshman year of high school. So, though he is a highly-ranked player, with tremendous upside, he's in the infancy of football development.

He's also a young man that's seen a tremendous amount of rapid development on his frame in recent months. Bolstering up from around 230 pounds to up to 270 entering his senior season. Jonah-Ajonye told FanNation's Brooks Austin that he plans to play in college around 285.

Separation is another tool that Jonah-Ajonye utilizes very well. Standing at 6' 4", Jonah-Ajonye has over a 6' 10" wingspan, which he uses to completely extend offensive linemen and gain control of his oncoming blocker. In many plays from his junior tape, we see him doing this, which creates very quick tackles from Jonah-Ajonye.

Although there are some early signs of greatness from Jonah-Ajonye, some things may need to be developed, as is the case with any high school recruit, college players, and even pros. But, in talks with Brooks Austin from The Film Guy Network, he noted how Georgia is the place to go for development.

The 2024 Georgia recruiting class will seemingly go down as the best class in this cycle, but the question is, will it be the best class ever? Kirby Smart and his staff are aiming for it, as they have now landed 25 commits and are looking for more through the weekend.
