FRISCO - Leighton Vander Esch being ruled out for the rest of the 2023 season due to his neck injury was not a surprise. Nor is the Monday news of his official retirement due to the medical issue.

Owner Jerry Jones said, “We’re proud that he wore the star on his helmet.”

During the season, Jones called the end to Vander Esch's season "such a very significant loss for us.''

And obviously, the concept of retirement became a natural question when Dallas released him on Friday.

Vander Esch, 28, got hurt on Oct. 8 in the loss at the 49ers. Vander Esch, the team's first-round pick in 2018 and a Pro Bowler as a rookie, has a history of battling through neck issues.

And now it’s time for the next chapter in the life of Leighton Vander Esch.

Said LVE: ‘God, I strive to let you work through me in this next chapter to continue to impact people’s lives and to be a light in this world.”
