The Arizona Wildcats are very good right now, and they could be even better next season with incoming five-star freshman Caleb Holt.

Earlier this month, the highly-touted 6-foot-6 recruit announced that he will be attending the University of Arizona next season to continue his basketball career. Holt is considered one of the top players nationally in his high school class, and now he’ll join one of the top collegiate programs in the country next season.

Holt was named a McDonald's All-American this season and chose Arizona despite offers from Ole Miss, Alabama, Kentucky, Providence, and Houston, among many other power-conference schools. His size and athleticism have made him one of the top prospects in the country, and he’ll look to further his legacy at the NCAA level.

Holt has some familiarity with Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd, as he played on the USA U19 team, which is coached by Lloyd.

At All-American Media Day, Holt explained his reasoning for choosing Arizona as his next destination, noting that Lloyd’s presence played a major factor.

  • “Definitely the culture they have,” Holt said when asked why he chose Arizona. “It’s something very similar to where I’m at right now, Prolific Prep. Attack every day, day by day, with the mindset of winning the day. That’s the memo we have at Prolific Prep, and that’s the memo Tommy Lloyd has. I got to play for Tommy Lloyd at U19 USA, so I got to see what he was about there.”

  • “[I’m] an exciting player, wanting to win every day,” Holt added when asked what Arizona fans can expect from him. “Going to give you everything they got on the court, whether it’s shooting, assisting, just being that leader on the team how Jaden Bradley is for the team this year.”

Tommy Lloyd’s future at Arizona has been very much in question in light of North Carolina’s head coaching position being open. Lloyd has built up Arizona into a national title contender, and as long as he is in Tucson, the Wildcats will remain one of the better destinations for incoming freshmen in the country.

Holt will look to continue Arizona’s recent trend of standout rookies being an integral part of the team’s success. This year’s team has three notable freshmen in Ivan Kharchenkov, Brayden Burries, and Koa Peat, all of whom start for the Wildcats and have profound impacts that Holt will try to replicate next season.
