Takeaways: No. 21 Auburn' 13-3 win over Jacksonville State

Despite a slow start, Auburn picked up a dominant win over Jacksonville State. What are the biggest things to take away from the game?

The No. 21 Auburn Tigers hosted the Jacksonville State Gamecocks at Plainsman Park and came away with a 13-3 win.

Jacksonville State got out to a quick start in the top of the first inning prior to a rain delay, but a seven-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning put the Tigers in position to pick up the win.

What are the biggest takeaways from the game?

Ike Irish did what he does

Auburn’s sophomore catcher has been one of the team’s most dependable bats so far this season and that was the case again tonight.

Irish went 2-4 with three RBI, one home run and one stolen base.

Irish’s 2024 season is shaping up to be even bigger than his freshman campaign in 2023. If he can keep up this pace throughout SEC play, Irish could be heading to the big leagues soon.

It was a home run derby at Plainsman Park

A total of five home runs were hit tonight.

In addition to Irish, Mason Maners, Cooper McMurray and Chris Stanfield all went yard.

Caleb Johnson hit the only home run of the night for the Gamecocks. The limits of Plainsman Park were pushed many times tonight.

Christian Herberholz had a solid outing

In his seventh appearance and third start of the season, Auburn’s senior right-hander got the job done.

Following a length break from the rain delay after throwing only seven pitches, Maners pitched four innings and allowed only three runs off of five hits. He struck seven batters out while only walking one.

Auburn’s rotation has been unstable so far this season, but Herberholz appears to be working towards holding down a permanent spot in it.

Auburn is now 16-8 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday night when they begin a road series with the Texas A&M Aggies. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT on Thursday and Friday then 7 p.m. CT on Saturday.

The television broadcasts for games one and two can be found on SEC Network+ and then SEC Network for game three. The Auburn Sports Network broadcast for each game can be heard anywhere on the Auburn Athletics app.
