Is Auburn's 2024 Recruiting Class Ranked Too Low?

In this story:

Where should the Auburn Tigers' 2024 recruiting class be ranked?

Recruiting rankings are based on mathematical rankings and adding them up. Shouldn't there be some sheer logic added to the equation, too?

Those two points above are why the 2024 Auburn recruiting class should be higher. First, here are the Rivals, 247, and On3 rankings for the Tigers:

Rivals: 8th

247: 7th

On3: 7th

Auburn being in such a close position within all three of those services places things into perspective for how recruiting services use similar metrics to calculate a final tally. Now, onto the logic as a counterpoint.

Think about the NFL Draft and how it's often discussed that there are premium positions like drafting a quarterback, left tackle, defensive lineman, cornerback, or a big-play receiver to maximize value at the top of the Draft. Four of Auburn's top-five recruits fall into that category and the fifth is a player that can play different roles.

That player would be Demarcus Riddick, a linebacker who's athletic enough to play inside or outside linebacker, and he could be utilized at the nickel position as well. Linebacker is not a premium spot by itself but his versatility changes the dynamics.  Riddick is a versatile talent for the Tigers defensive staff to work with. The other four players are playing premium positions.

Signing elite defensive line talent like Amaris Williams is going to help change Auburn's defense. He impacts the game more than say a tight end ranked the same as him, or perhaps a strong safety, because he's a big-time athlete that can play on the edge or even slide inside and play 3-techique. Either way, he gets to te quarterback and that's always in style.

From Auburn's class and based on the 247 rankings, the other three are edge defender Jamonta Waller, as well as elite wide receivers Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson.

Perry Thompson officially signs with the Auburn Tigers

Waller is much like Williams in that he's a versatile edge defender that creates havoc. The defensive staff for the Tigers will have a field day using him in different roles. Then there are the two wide receivers to discuss for the Tigers.

Just looking at Auburn's wide receiver depth chart there's no question that Coleman and Thompson are going to play early. One and/or the other might even start next fall. One could argue that either of them is better than any other high school receiver signed by Auburn in the last decade or perhaps even longer.

Again, elite players who play premium positions.

Maybe it's a different mode of thinking, but singing elite talent at a prime position of need like receiver should also be a key factor in determining recruiting rankings. Auburn flat out hit the home run at wide receiver and that's the most pressing concern for the Tigers heading into the 2024 spring practices.

At the end of the day, Auburn's recruiting class is really good. It should be ranked higher.
