Auburn football brings in standout safety via the portal

The Auburn Tigers brought in a talented player via the portal.

The Auburn Tigers have been looking to add secondary players via the transfer portal.

One of the best position groups on Auburn's roster last season was the secondary thanks to veteran leadership. The flip side of having a ton of older players in a position group is that while it might be good for the short term, you will need a lot out of the portal to replenish the room after the veterans leave for the NFL Draft. That is the position Coach Hugh Freeze is in right now.

Luckily, help is on the way as former Texas safety Jerrin Thompson just announced that he would be transferring from the Lone Star State to the Plains. Thompson was part of the 2020 recruiting class, where he was a four-star, ranked 183rd overall by 247Sports composite rankings. Last season for the Longhorns, Thompson played 568 snaps and graded out at a 73.1 on PFF.

Emma Hutchinson of The Daily Texan had this to say about Thompson hitting the portal, "The Texas secondary will be missing a core player with Thompson's absence, as he made 38 tackles, broke seven passes, and caught three interceptions this season, including one for a touchdown. Head coach Steve Sarkisian mentioned Thompson as one of the players who bought into his plan from the start and have watched it come to fruition."

Auburn has plenty of young players in the secondary, but a lot of the veteran leadership is heading to the NFL Draft. Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian clearly viewed Thompson as a leader, and he is a player who helps the Tigers the minute he walks on campus. Auburn's roster just got better, thanks to another solid transfer portal addition in Thompson.
