Baylor Coach Scott Drew Promotes New Book

Drew’s ‘Road to Joy’ is out now and chronicles the Bears’ rise from the ashes of scandal to a national championships in 2021.

Baylor coach Scott Drew is making the rounds promoting his new book, ‘Road to Joy,’ including an appearance on Fox News’ morning show last week.

Drew also had an autograph signing at The Magnolia on Saturday in Waco.

The book is subtitled, ‘Leading with Faith, Playing with Purpose, Leaving a Legacy,’ and was released on May 3. The book serves as an inspirational memoir of personal and professional growth for Drew.

During his appearance with Fox, Drew explained why the word ‘Joy’ is in the title of the book.

“Coaches need to keep simple. It’s the KISS principle — keep it simple, stupid,” Drew said. “We’re a Christ-centered program at Baylor. We prepare champions for life. It’s spiritual, it’s character, it’s academics, and it’s athletic excellence. So joy is, as long as you have the right priorities in life — Jesus, Others, and Yourself. We have a lot of graduates out there, and no matter what field you’re in, no matter what you do, people want to be around others who are servant leaders.”

Drew is credited with perhaps college basketball’s biggest rebuilding job. He took over the program in 2003 after the murder of Baylor player Patrick Dennehy.

His teammate, Carlton Dotson, was charged and convicted for the crime, and then-Baylor head coach Dave Bliss was ultimately dismissed due to that scandal and an additional recruiting scandal.

Drew, who was then the head coach at Valparaiso, having succeeded his father, Homer, took the Baylor job knowing there would be few scholarships to work with and that the program was effectively in tatters.

Drew built the program back up and took it to new heights, including the program’s first regular-season conference championship in 2020-21 — which was its first since 1950 — and the program’s first national championship in April of 2021. Last season, the Bears finished with a share of the regular-season Big 12 crown and then lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
