Baylor Veterans See Versatility, Talent on Defense

Both new and returning Bears could take on new roles in Ron Roberts' defense.

With five new starters on defense, continuity from a great 2021 season is easier said than done for the Baylor Bears.

Losing All-American Jalen Pitre as well as Terrel Bernard, J.T. Woods, and Kalon Barnes to the NFL, there will be some shuffling on the defensive side.

One of those players who has already found value in versatility is Bryson Jackson. Recruited by Matt Rhule to play Pitre's STAR position, Jackson initially found playing time on special teams but has etched a role in Ron Roberts' defense as a pass-rushing JACK linebacker who expects even more attention from pass blockers this year.

"I was just doing what I could each day and pass rushing became a home," Jackson said. "It's just something I keep working at and this year we've got a lot of things going in, a lot of packages, so it's going to be pretty fun."

Jackson is building off a career year in 2021 where he played all 14 games and set career highs in tackles (15), tackles for loss (5), and sacks (3.5).

Another player shifting spots is linebacker Matt Jones. The Odessa Permian (TX) product moves from the JACK position back to inside linebacker. Even though Jones broke out towards the end of the 2021 season, he expects to be even more comfortable in 2022.

"I've been down at JACK because I know we were weak at it, the last two years I've been playing it because we needed help, but I really feel like inside [linebacker] is my home," Jones said. "I just feel like this year is going to be the true Matt Jones."

While some of the veterans focus on new positions, they have also been impressed with some of the young players in camp.

"We have a lot of talent as far as the young guys, especially on defense," Jackson said. "Having the maturity to go out on the field and watch film every day and take notes during meetings, those are the things that are important."

Freshmen defensive backs Reggie Bush and Alfonzo Allen have turned heads in fall camp, but the player most tabbed to step up this year is cornerback Lorando "Snaxx" Johnson.

"Snaxx is a dog, he's going to fit in just fine at corner," senior safety Christian Morgan said. "He's going to make a lot of plays, I'm confident in Snaxx."

The new look Bears defense gets its first test on Sept. 3 when they host Albany.
