BYU Basketball to Play in Pittsburgh in Joe Lunardi's Latest

Selection Sunday is just two days away. While a few conferences still need to wrap up their conference tournaments, BYU is at home waiting to find out their seeding for the upcoming tournament. BYU is a lock to be in the tournament. It's not a matter of if they will be in, rather where they will be seeded. In Joe Lunardi's latest, BYU is projected to be the top five-seed which would place them in the West bracket.

Ironically, being the 5-seed in the West bracket would put BYU on the East coast in the first round of the NCAA tournament. In Lunardi's projection, BYU would face 12-seed USF in Pittsburgh. The winner of BYU-USF would advance to take on the winner of Illinois-Samford for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16.

In this projection, being the top five-seed would hurt BYU's chances of playing in Salt Lake City. The second overall five-seed will play in Salt Lake. Right now, that team is projected to be San Diego State. San Diego State, however, is still in the Mountain West tournament and could boost its resume over the next few days. For BYU fans that want the Cougars to play in the first round at the Delta Center, they should either hope San Diego State leapfrogs BYU to be the top 5-seed or hope that one of the projected 4-seeds loses, allowing BYU to move up to the 4-seed line.

Illinois, Auburn, Alabama, and Kansas are currently the 4-seeds in Lunardi's projection. Illinois, Auburn, and Alabama play in their respective conference tournaments on Friday.
