Two Prominent Brackets Have BYU Back in Salt Lake City

There's still a chance for BYU to play in Salt Lake in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

Selection Sunday is just one day away. For weeks, ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi projected BYU basketball to be a 5-seed and play in Salt Lake City in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Yesterday, however, Lunardi changed his projection. While BYU remained a 5-seed, Lunardi had BYU making a cross-country trip to Pittsburgh. One day later, Lunardi updated his projection and put BYU back in Salt Lake City.

In Lunardi's projection, BYU would play 12-seed Grand Canyon in the first round. The winner of that game would take on the winner of Alabama-Samford for a spot in the Sweet 16. That would be one of the more favorable draws for BYU.

Brian Bennet of The Athletic updated his bracket projections on Saturday morning as well. Bennet has BYU as a 4-seed playing in Salt Lake City. In his projection, the Cougars would take on 13-seed Charleston. The winner of BYU-Charleston would advance to take on the winner of Alabama-Grand Canyon.

If the bracketologists are correct, BYU's floor appears to be a 5-seed. According to Bracket Matrix, a website that compiles the 115 most accurate projections on the internet, BYU is a 5-seed or better in 98% of the brackets. Only 2 brackets out of 115 have BYU as a 6-seed. A 4-seed is more likely than a 6-seed. 10% of brackets have BYU as a 4-seed. 88% of the brackets have BYU as a 5-seed.
