BYU AD Tom Holmoe joined BYU Sports Nation to address the fluid 2020 football schedule. Here are a few highlights from the interview:

First and foremost, Holmoe addressed the report that BYU was working to schedule a game with Alabama. Holmoe said, "I've had a lot of conversations with a number of people and some have been reported from their side. And I think they'll continue today and tomorrow and until this goes to the point where we're playing football." Holmoe also added that a matchup with Notre Dame was possible, but he noted that "Notre Dame is an entity of its own." Notre Dame still owes BYU a return trip to Provo.

On whether BYU could form a partnership with a conference this season, Holmoe said, "Anything is possible and anything is on the table."

Holmoe said that BYU would be willing to play in the Spring. However, what he is hearing and reading is that spring football "is the last resort."

If all conferences decide to play a conference-only schedule BYU could be left on the outside looking. Holmoe said a schedule with fellow independent schools is on the table:

"Yes, that could occur if all other leagues go conference-only. We could work out some type of an arrangement with the other independent teams, or any other schools that for some reason might have a game available."

A few other notable items:

  • Holmoe said BYU would match P5 COVID-19 protocols
  • The number of fans would be reduced if football is played this fall.

It's clear that the situation is fluid and those at the very top are still waiting to see what happens over the next few weeks. BYU is creating contingency plans but Holmoe notes that everything is "in staging" and the hope is to arrive at a contract.
