For the second time in as many recruiting classes, BYU has signed a four-star tight end. Earlier this year, California native Ryner Swanson announced his commitment to BYU over fellow finalists Texas, Oregon, Utah, and Texas A&M. He also held competing offers from Washington, Stanford, Ole Miss, Florida, Colorado, Arizona, and Arizona State among others.

Swanson took official visits to Texas, Oregon, and BYU during the process. After taking an official visit to Provo, Swanson shut down his recruitment and committed to the Cougars. He plans graduate in December and enroll at BYU in January. He also plans to play one year before serving a mission.

Swanson can do it all from the tight end position. He's a dynamic receiving threat with soft hands and he's dangerous after the catch. He has all the talent to be a multi-year starter and dynamic weapon for BYU's offense at tight end. He could even compete for playing time right away. Aaron Roderick's offense is very challenging to defend when a tight end can be both a blocking and receiving threat - that's exactly what Swanson will bring to BYU.

If BYU is going to compete for Big 12 championships, it needs to win more recruiting battles for the top LDS players. Getting Swanson is the kind of recruiting win that can propel BYU to the next level. Swanson was a vocal leader of this recruiting class. He was trying to help the coaches bring as much talent to Provo as possible.
