Over the weekend, BYU hosted some of its top targets on campus for official visits. Among the priority recruits was American Fork standout Davis Andrews. Andrews has been a top priority for the new defensive staff since they arrived in Provo. We caught up with Andrews to discuss his recruitment and recap his official visit.

On his relationship with Jay Hill and the new defensive staff, Andrews said, "My relationship with [the BYU staff] has grown so much, especially since the new staff [was hired]. It’s definitely very personal and you can tell they want me."

Davis has a unique, versatile skillset that is coveted by college coaches. Schools like Notre Dame don't recruit Utah often, but Andrews' capabilities are so unique that the Fighting Irish have made trips to Utah to recruit him. College coaches like Andrews' ability to play either safety or linebacker combined with his hip fluidity and foot speed. BYU's coaching staff has described him as irreplaceable on their recruiting board.

"BYU's staff has made it seem like I am very important to them," Davis added. "They said I’m not really replaceable to them and they know I fit their defense, because you’ve seen Jay Hill and Just Ena at Utah with linebackers like me with Chase Hansen and Cody Barton."

Andrews flashed the ability, like Chase Hansen did at Utah, to be a play-making safety as a junior. He was excellent in coverage, he was a physical presence that punished players for going over the middle, and he had a nose for the football.

Andrews has taken official visits to Notre Dame, Utah, and UCLA. He tells Cougs Daily that the environment at BYU made his visit unique. "What made BYU unique was the atmosphere," Andrews said. "For me, the people all around and especially the players, everyone has the same standards and it’s nice to see a university that has these standards and goals...[having] a team and players that are centered around the LDS gospel made it very unique for me."

Andrews was taken around campus by a few players. That stood out as his favorite part of the BYU visit. "My favorite part was probably going around with the players," Andrews added. "I usually don’t like to do that on my official visits, but it showed me how different BYU was because the kids that are there are kids you’d like to be around."

Andrews tells Cougs Daily that he is in no rush to make his college decision. He will serve a mission after high school, so he is taking his time to find that school that best suits him.

BYU will continue to make him a top priority until he makes his college decision.

Andrews grew up playing football, baseball and basketball. "I thought would be going to college for baseball," Andrews said. It was "easy to decide" on football once he started getting so much attention from college football coaches. With a few months to go before his senior season, he is being prioritized by various Power Five programs.

When he's not playing football or training for football, Andrews likes to spend his time on the golf course.

The Big 12 is home to some of the best offenses in college football. New BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill was hired to revitalize the BYU defense as it heads to the Big 12, and a big part of that was making improvements on the recruiting trail. Landing a commitment from Davis Andrews would go a long ways in turning around the BYU defense.
