Cal Women's Basketball: Bears Add Gonzaga Transfer McKayla Williams

Williams started all 33 games for the Zags this past season as a junior

The Cal women’s basketball program picked up its third transfer in the past few weeks when Gonzaga transfer McKayla Williams announced on her Instragram account over the weekend that she has committed to the Golden Bears.

The 6-foot-1 Williams started all 33 games for Gonzaga last season as a junior and averaged 7.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists while hitting 34.2% of her three-point shots. Gonzaga led the nation in three-point shooting percentage. She received honorable mention on the all-West Coast Conference team.

Williams’ best asset is her defensive ability, and she was usually assigned to guard the opponent’s top offensive threat.

She was a four-star recruit at Windward School in Los Angeles.

Cal has already added San Francisco transfer Ioanna Krimili and UC Santa Barbara transfer Ila Lane.

Cal has had four players from its 2022-23 roster transfer out. Jayda Curry transferred to Louisville, freshman Amaya Bonner transferred to Florida State, Sela Heide transferred to Oregon State, and Evelien Lutje Schipholt entered the transfer portal but has not yet committed to a new school.

The Golden Bears finished with a 13-17 record in 2022-23 and that includes a 4-14 mark in Pac-12 play under fourth-year head coach Charmin Smith.
