Former Cal center Lars Thiemann, who entered the transfer portal last month, has committed to Loyola Marymount, according to multiple reports.

Thiemann started 30 games for the Golden Bears this past season and he was Cal’s leading scorer among Bears’ players who were available for more than half the season.

He entered the transfer portal after Mark Fox was dismissed after the Bears’ 3-29 season, but before Mark Madsen was hired as his replacement.

At Loyola Marymount, Thiemann joins a team that went 19-12 overall in 2022-23 and 9-7 in the West Coast Conference. The Lions posted two big wins this season, upsetting Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash., and also beating Saint Mary’s.

The 7-foot-1 Thiemann played four seasons for Cal, but he has one season of college eligibility remaining because one of those seasons at Cal was the 2019-20 season, which did not count against college eligibility because of the pandemic. .

This season, he averaged 9.5 points, which was second on the team behind Devin Askew, although Agnew played only 13 games this past season. Thiemann averaged 5.4 rebounds, which led the team.

Theimann scored in double figures 16 times in 2022-23, including a season-high 18 points on the road against Arizona. He had seven rebounds or more seven times, including a season-high 11 boards against Texas State.

He is a classic low-post center, so he might not have fit in Madsen's system, which looks for fast big men.
