Newell made 11 starts this season and averaged 5.5 points and 3.5 rebounds for the Bears. Brown averaged 3.5 points in 32 games as a freshman this year. pic.twitter.com/8N2Yaytruw
Brown showed potential in his freshman season at Cal in 2023-24. He was the only freshman who saw significant playing time for Cal this past season, and he never seemed intimidated by the moment of his lack of experience.
Brown p[lay in all 32 games for game in 2023-24, all of the bench. He averaged 17.1 minutes of playing time along with 3.5 points and 1.1 rebounds.
He scored 13 points against USC and 12 points against both Arizona and Washington State.
With the presumed departures of Askew, Newell, Okafor and Brown by way of the transfer portal, Cal may have only one player back from the 2023-24 team that received significant playing time. That would be Jalen Celestine, who was a starter as a junior this past season. Jaylon Tyson, the Bears' top scorer in 2023-24, is eligible to return for the 2023-24 season, but he might decided to turn pro and enter the 2024 NBA draft. He is expected to be a later first-round pick or an early second-round selection.
Brown is likely to attract interest from some high-profile college programs.
