Dayton “Dayday” Aupiu, a three-star safety from Pacifica High School in Oxnard, Calif., committed to Cal for the class of 2024 on Monday, one day after his official visit to Berkeley.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Aupiu is the Bears’ eighth commitment for 2024 and the second defensive back, a position that has been Cal’s strong suit in recent years. Five Cal defensive backs have been taken in the NFL draft in the past four NFL drafts, and all five became safeties in the NFL.

"What made me commit to Cal is the way they develop DBs and what they could do with my skill," he told Golden Bear Report.

Both the Rivals and the 247 Sports websites categorize Aupiu as an athlete rather than a defensive back. Rivals ranks him as the 56th-best overall prospect in the state of California, and 247 Sports ranks him as the nation’s 58th-best athlete prospect in the class.

Aupui had taken official visits to Utah and Arizona earlier in June, and he had offers from those two schools as well as Penn State, Washington, Colorado, Purdue, Washington State, Duke, San Diego State, Boston College and Indiana, among others.

Here is a video of Aupui’s junior year highlights:

Aupui had said just a few days ago that he would announce his commitment decision on July 4, but decided to make it public on Monday.

Cal is hoping Aunui becomes as productive as the five Golden Bears safeties who have been taken in the NFL draft since 2020 – Ashtyn Davis, Jaylinn Hawkins, Camryn Bynum, Elijah Hicks and Daniel Scott.
