Cal added an unproven, but speedy wide receiver from the transfer portal on Monday, when Mississippi State freshman Marquez Dortch announced on social media that he will transfer to Cal.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Dortch was a four-star recruit coming of high school in Lucedale., Miss., but he played in only one game in 2022 as a true freshman and had just one reception for 1 yard.

That would count as a redshirt year, so he will have four years of college eligibility remaining. Mississippi State finished 9-4 last season, including 4-4 in the SEC

A wide receiver at his size (165 pounds) is expected to be speedster, and that is the case with Dortsch, who competed in track in high school and was timed in 10.92 seconds in the 100 meters. He could be a big-play threat for the Bears.

Dortch may be a long-term project for Cal, but he also provides insurance at wide receiver where Cal needs depth, especially after J.Michael Sturdivant transferred to UCLA in the offseason.

Cal's top three receivers figure to be Jeremiah Hunter, Mavis Anderson and Monroe Young. But Illinois transfer wide receiver Brian Hightower, who will be a redshirt senior, missed most of spring ball with an injury, while junior Tommy Christakos and senior Mason Starling missed all of spring football with injuries.

Cal recently added North Carolina State transfer quarterback Ben Finley, who presumably will compete with Sam Jackson V for the starting job unless Cal adds another quarterback through the transfer portal.

The Golden Bears finished with a 4-8 record last season, when it was 10th in the conference in scoring and fifth in passing yards per game. Cal has a new offensive coordinator in Jake Spavital.
