Cal has lost a signficiant 2020 recruit, and to make matters worse, the Bears lost him to Stanford.

Athlete Casey Filkins of Lake Oswego, Oregon, had announced his commitment to Cal back in May, but this week he de-committed from Cal and announced on Twitter that he is now committed to Stanford for 2020.

Filkins did not received an official offer from Stanford until a few weeks ago.

In his social-media message announcing his choice of Stanford, Filkins started by saying, “When I was 14 I knew in my heart that there was truly one school I dreamed of playing football at.”

He also said Stanford “is the only school I would ever consider reopening my recruitment for.”

Nothing is binding until a prospect signs a letter of intent. The early signing period for football is Dec. 18-20, 2019.

The 247 Sports website ranks Filkins as the nation’s 776th-best prospect overall and the 12th-best all-purpose back. Ron Gould, currently Stanford’s running backs coach after spending many years as Cal’s running backs coach, was cited as the Cardinal’s chief recruiter for Filkins.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Filkins is considered a three-star recruit by rivals.com, which does not rank him nationally among its 2020 prospects.

This season Cal is 4-4 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-12. The Bears host Washington State on Saturday and hope to end their four-game losing streak.
