Cal announced the addition of three players on Wednesday, the first day of the national signing day. Two of them were junior college transfers. Cal signed most of its 2023 class during the early signing period in December.

The Bears added junior college wide receiver Marquis Montgomery of Snow College, who chose Cal over Texas A&M, Penn State, Oregon and LSU, among others.  Presumably he will help make up for the loss of J.Michael Sturdivant, who transferred to UCLA. Montgomery is originally from Tacoma, Wash.

The 6-foot-5 Montgomery averaged more than 17 yards per reception this past season at Snow, which is located in Utah.

He joins Illinois transfer wide receiver Brian Hightower as the new wide receivers for new Cal offensive coordinator Jake Spavital.

The Bears added offensive lineman Martin Tine, a 6-foot-7, 335-pound tackle who played one season at Blinn Junior College in Texas and played this past season at East Los Angeles College. The Bears desperately need help on the offensive line, which was the team's biggest weakness in 2022 and then lost lineman Ben Coleman to the transfer portal.

Tine also had offers from Fresno State, Coastal Carolina, Hawaii, Akron and Ball State, among others.

Cal also signed long-snapper David Bird of Glendale, Arizona. The Bears needed a long snapper with Slater Zellers transferring to Arizona State.

Bird is rated the nation's best long-snapper recruit by Kohl's Kicking, a training camp for kickers and snappers.

Every team needs a reliable long-snapper, whose value is noticed when a bad snap is made on a critical field-goal attempt in a pivotal game.
