Carter Jones, a junior inside linebacker from Irvine, Calif., who had offers from Florida State, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Miami, Oregon State, Arizona and Oklahoma among others, has committed to Cal for the class of 2025.

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Jones, who attends Crean Lutheran High School, made his announcement on Sunday via social media.

Jones is rated a three-star prospect by both 247 Sports and Rivals, and 247 Sports Composite ranks him as the nation's 64th-best linebacker prospect in the junior class.

Jones is Cal's fourth commitment in the class of 2025.  Thirteen high school players are committed to the Bears for 2024.

Jones recorded 152 tackles, including nine tackles for loss, during his junior season.

He visited Cal when the Bears faced USC. Cal lost that game 50-49 when it failed on a two-point conversion in the closing minutes, but apparently that did not deter Carter.

The inside linebacker spot is always a key position in the defense Cal runs under head coach Justin Wilcox and defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon.

Kaleb Elarms-Orr showed the making of a star as a redshirt sophomore inside linebacker this past season for Cal, but he has entered the transfer portal.  All-conference inside linebacker Jackson Sirmon missed half the 2023 season with an arm injury and he has run out of eligibility.

However, Cade Uluave filled in admirably for Sirmon and was named the Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year.

Of course, by the time Jones arrives at Cal, the Bears will be starting their second season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. That's why it was significant that Cal beat out Florida State, Miami and some other ACC schools for Jones' commitment
