Cal Football Video: Does Spencer Brasch Shave Yet? 'That's a Good Question'

Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin confirms that the Bears' freshman quarterback does have a driver's license

How young is Spencer Brasch?

Young enough that Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin laughed but didn't have a definitive answer when asked if the freshman quarterback shaves.

"He does have a driver's license," Baldwin said.

Cal coach Justin Wilcox offered no insights during his media session on Monday about the status Devon Modster, saying only that Modster is week-to-week and that Brasch would start if Modster can't play Saturday. Modster, who started the past two games after Chase Garbers was injured, left the Oregon State game early last Saturday and is listed as "week-to-week" on the team injury report.

But on Tuesday it became increasingly apparent that Modster will not be playing Saturday night when the Bears (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12) visits No. 12 Utah (6-1, 3-1) at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Modster was in a T-shirt and shorts after practice, and all the talk was about Brasch, the true freshman from Gilbert, Arizona, and redshirt freshman walk-on Robby Rowell of Acalanes High in Lafayette.

Brasch and Rowell were sharing the practice reps on Tuesday, and it seems one of the two will get the call against one of the nation's toughest defensive units.

Wilcox did not hesitate on Monday to declare Brasch the starter if Modster is out. He said Rowell would be Brasch's backup in that case.

Neither Rowell nor Brasch was made available for interviews, nor was Modster.

Brasch was 2-for-6 for 24 yards with an interception and two sacks in his two series at the end of Cal's 21-17 loss to Oregon State last Saturday.

He is considered to have a strong arm, but he is a kid and he looks the part.

If Brasch is the starter against the ferocious Utes, the experience is likely -- as they say -- to put a little hair on his chest.

Even if he doesn't yet sport much on his cheeks.
