QB Andrew Mauschardt Commits to Cal as a Walk-On

Mauschardt suffered a knee injury early in the 2023 season at St. Paul's High School in Santa Fe Springs, Calif.

Cal may have picked up a hidden gem in Andrew Mauschardt, a quarterback from Santa Fe Springs, California, who on Sunday committed to Cal reportedly as a preferred walk-on in the class of 2024.

A year ago, Mauschardt had offers from Illinois, Indiana, Coastal Carolina, Boston College and San Jose State, among others, but he missed most of the 2023 season at St. Paul’s High School. He suffered a knee injury in the first quarter of the fourth game and did not play the rest of the season.

He is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.

Mauschardt completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 555 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in the three full games he played in 2023, and in 2022 as a junior, he had 15 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions.

The first day of the second signing period is Wednesday, and Cal has already signed most of its 2024 class. But Cal may be getting a steal by acquiring Mauschardt without using a scholarship.

Spring ball begins March 18, and the main attraction will be the start of the quarterback competition between Fernando Mendoza, who started the final eight games of the 2023 season as a redshirt freshman, and North Texas transfer Chandler Rogers.

Mauschardt presumably will add depth to the position.

Justin Wilcox said earlier that Cal planned to add another quarterback, and Mauschardt might not be the player Wilcox had in mind.  The Bears may try to bring in a transfer after other teams complete spring workouts.
