Cal chancellor Carol Christ reportedly attended Thursday’s UC Regents meeting in San Francisco, suggesting that something meaningful might happen regarding whether the regents would approve UCLA’s move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten in 2024.

In fact, no announcement of the regents’ decision was made, and they postponed a final decision on the matter until Dec. 14.

Most people expected the regents to announce their decision on Thursday, and there were – and still are – several possible responses. They could approve UCLA's move to the Big Ten with no further comment. They could criticize UCLA’s move to the Big Ten but do nothing, essentially approving the move. They could say they will not approve the move and attempt to block it, hoping to keep UCLA in the Pac-12. Or they could approve UCLA’s move on the condition that UCLA subsidize its fellow Pac-12 UC school, Cal, based on the increased revenue the Bruins will make by joining the Big Ten.

But since the announcement of a decision was postponed for another month, it seems there is disagreement among the regents about what they can or should do.

The Dec. 14 meeting is expected to take place at UCLA.

And here is one other bit of information provided by Billy Witz of the New York Times:

The Board of Regents released the following statement regarding Thursday's meeting:

Following the report and discussion on the impacts of conference realignment related to the student-athlete experience, the Board of Regents announced that it will hold a special meeting on December 14th to make a final determination regarding UCLA’s intention to join the Big Ten conference. This additional time will allow the Board to fully consider the information presented today and address any additional questions that arise. It will also allow the Office of the President to make specific recommendations on how the University will better support and enhance the student-athlete experience.
