Cal Women's Gymnastics Seeded No. 3 Nationally, Will Host Regionals

The most successful season in Cal women’s gymnastics history continues next week with the Bears hosting the California Regional competition of the NCAA Championships, April 4, 5 and 7 at Haas Pavilion.

Cal has earned a program-best No. 3 national seed after completing a perfect 7-0 run to capture its first outright Pac-12 regular-season crown. The Bears are 18-3 overall.

Nine teams will compete at the regional meet next week, with the top two finishers qualifying for the NCAA nationals, April 18 and 20 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

The regional meet begins Thursday, April 4 with San Jose State and Southern Utah competing for a spot in the lower half of the bracket that also includes Cal, No. 14 Auburn and Stanford.

The opposite bracket features No. 6 Denver, No. 11 UCLA, Arizona State and Washington. The top two finishers on Friday, April 5 in each of those brackets advance to the Sunday, April 7 regional finals.

Cal, which climbed as high as No. 2 in the national rankings this season, was rewarded with an avalanche of Pac-12 honors.

Co-head coaches Justin Howell and Liz Crandall-Howell were named Pac-12 Coaches of the Year. Howell was honored for the fourth time since becoming Cal’s coach in 2013, and Crandall-Howell earned her second such honor.

The Bears also landed 14 spots on All-Pac-12 teams, including 12 on the first team.

Sophomore eMjae Frazier was one of only two athletes chosen to the all-conference first team in all five disciplines – all-around, vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. She ranks in the top-10 nationally in four events – all-around (No. 3), uneven bars (No. 4), balance beam (No. 6) and floor exercise (No. 9).

Junior Mya Lauzon, who is ranked as the No. 6 all-around gymnast in the country, was named first team All-Pac-12 in all-around, vault, balance beam and floor exercise. She has seven career All-Pac-12 honors after collecting three last season.

Junior Maddie Williams was chosen to the first team in all-around and uneven bars, senior Gabby Perea was first team on uneven bars and honorable mention all-conference on balance beam, and senior Andi Li earned honorable mention on uneven bars.
