Four-star wide receiver E.J. Williams commits to Tigers

Four-star wide receiver E.J. Williams has committed to the Tigers.

The Clemson Tigers had been silent the last month or so on the recruiting trail. 

But that changed Saturday when they once again went into the state of Alabama and for the second time in the last three years, plucked the top-ranked wide receiver — this time getting four-star wide receiver E.J. Williams. 

In 2018, the Tigers signed wide receiver Justyn Ross from Central High School in Phenix City, Ala., and Saturday they continued their Central High School dominance, as the senior Williams chose to follow in his former teammates footsteps and join Clemson.

The commitment of Williams further solidified the Tigers' claim to the nation's No. 1 recruiting class. 

According to 247sports' John Garcia Jr., the 6-foot-3, 188-pound wide receiver is a "tall, lean wide receiver with great length. (He is) strong off the line of scrimmage with (the) ability to drive deep down the field. (He is) comfortable with contact and can win contested plays more times than not. (His) long strides can open up room to operate underneath coverage with strong hand-eye coordination and body control. (He has a) wide catch radius. (He is) unafraid of contact but could stand to play more physical game. 

"(He has) good, not great speed or quickness in and out of breaks. (He is) in (the) early stages of route progression but effective on 9-cut and inside breaking routes. (He) can go off speed to break coverage timing off the line. 

"(He is a) smart kid with plus situational field awareness. (He is a) key cog in (the) downfield passing game for (the) state championship program in Alabama's largest classification. (Williams has a) basketball background. With time in (a) high-end Power 5 program (Williams) could grow into (a) true possession target with enhanced red zone value. (He) could prove productive in later stages of (his) college career once polish and bulk are added to the equation. (He) should be selected in one of the middle rounds of the NFL draft."

Williams chose the Tigers over the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers and Auburn Tigers.
