New York Post got it wrong, in a big way

CLEMSON—Facing a second-and-7 from their own 39, the Tigers' quarterback, and, by their own admission, the coaching staff, were fooled. The result of the play was an interception that appeared destined for to be a pick-6, but Lawrence had other ideas.

“I thought I had a quick throw to the outside and the corner made a good play," Lawrence said. "Right when I threw it, I thought, ‘this is going to be a pick.’ I just tried to make a play and give our defense a chance.”

Lawrence has caught some flack in recent days for his decision to sacrifice his body and make a touchdown saving tackle.

In fact, the New York Post ran a story titled, "Trevor Lawrence could’ve ruined Clemson’s season with this risky tackle."

"Trevor Lawrence spent his freshman season taking Clemson fans’ breath away. Thursday night, the star quarterback had them holding their breath," New York Post writer Howie Kussoy wrote. "The preseason Heisman Trophy frontrunner had an uneven season-opening performance in the top-ranked Tigers’ 52-14 win over Georgia Tech, and invited potential danger when he chased down a Yellow Jackets defender to make a hard tackle."

However, the Tigers' head coach Dabo Swinney disagrees with that assessment.

Swinney stated that Lawrence was simply doing what was required of him.

“Well you want to be smart but you don’t want to let the other team score," Swinney said. "I think as a football player you have to go make the play as required for your team. That was the play required and it gave us a chance to play goal line defense and at the end of the day you can’t go out and play this game scared. I don’t think that is a good mindset to have. You have to be smart and I think he is very smart. He is not looking for unnecessary hits or things like that.”

I guess the New York Post does not understand the goal of football is not letting your opponents score.
