Scott excited to see 'new look' Tigers

Few coaches in America have the benefit of coaching, arguably, one of the most talented position groups in all of college football. But one of those coaches who can make that claim is Clemson wide receivers coach Jeff Scott.

CLEMSON — Few coaches in America have the benefit of coaching, arguably, one of the most talented position groups in all of college football. But one of those coaches who can make that claim is Clemson wide receivers coach Jeff Scott.

And even though he lost one of the most reliable wide receivers in the country, Hunter Renfrow, to the NFL, this season is especially exciting for Scott because, even with three true freshmen wide receivers, this season is very close to deja-vu.

"Every year is exciting when you have a talented group. It's probably a little bit more exciting," Scott said "But you know, it really doesn't feel a lot different that last year or the year before. I think we've been fortunate on offense and defense to have some talented groups every year. That's not really new, but I think just being able to start over to see how this group comes together in August and what it starts to look like as we get ready for that opener. I think that's probably the most exciting part of this time of year."

The excitement that surrounds the start of camp for Scott revolves around not only the talent that he has sitting in his wide receiver room but having the opportunity to see who will step up for the team this season.

"To me, that's one of the exciting things about college football that the roster does change every year," Scott said. "Maybe in the NFL free agency it changes more than maybe it has in the past, but that's normal for us. You're excited about the next group.

"The guys have been working hard waiting for their opportunity, and it's a really big group of guys. Not just some of new freshmen coming. There's some retro freshmen, some sophomores that have really been in the program have been working hard. Kind of waiting for their time, and that is what this all is gonna be."

"We have a young team," he added. "We have some guys that have been there before. A lot of those guys weren't here in 2016 so for us as coaches it's really about starting over. It's a new group every year. You got to go back an earn it. What we've been doing in the spring, what they're dong in the summer is gonna matter. It's going to count next to whenever the game is on the line in the fall."

With a group of talented, but very young wide receivers, some of whom were a part of last season's national championship run and some of whom were not, the task of helping the young athletes understand what is expected of them will fall on the coaching staff. 

"I think, obviously, as coaches we can use some of our prior experiences maybe as an advantage," Scott said. "We have a young team. We have some guys that have been there before. A lot of those guys weren't here in 2016 so for us as coaches it's really about starting over. It's a new group every year. You've got to  go back and earn it. What we've been doing in the spring, what they're doing in the summer is going to matter. It's going to count next to whenever the game is on the line in the fall."
