Swinney, Venables get new deals

CLEMSON--Clemson University’s Board of Trustees’ approved new contracts for Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Venables has a fifth year added to his contract, with the same terms as his previous contract— $11.6 million over five years.

Swinney’s new deal is a 10-year contract that will pay the head coach an average of $9.3 million—second only to Alabama’s Nick Saban.

“Dabo’s leadership of our football program has brought value, exposure and unprecedented levels of success not only to our athletics program but to the entire university," Radakovich said. "He has demonstrated the ability to consistently achieve at the highest level on and off the field, and he has done so with a commitment to integrity and core principles. This new agreement is evidence of Clemson’s steadfast commitment to Dabo and to our football program, and we are thrilled that he and his family will be a part of our community for years to come.”

In addition to the raises, all 10 members of the full-time coaching staff are set to rake in more than $1 million in bonuses for their hand in leading the Tigers to their third national title in school history.

Each of the nine position coaches and coordinators all collected $10,000 for the Tigers’ appearance in the ACC Championship, $60,000 for their appearance in the College Football Playoff National Championship and an additional $25,000 for winning the game.

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables’ stellar defense also landed him bonuses to the tune of $200,000 ($100,00 for each) for his defense finishing “Top 5 Relative Defense” and “Top 5 Total Defense.”

In addition to the assistant coaches’ bonuses, head coach Dabo Swinney will end up taking home more than $1 million on his own.

Swinney earned $50,000 for winning the ACC’s Atlantic Division, $150,00 for winning the ACC Championship, $200,000 for the berth in the CFP, $200,000 for winning the semifinal game and $250,000 for their CFP National Championship victory.

He also added an additional $25,000 for winning the ACC Coach of the Year and $50,000 for winning the Bear Bryant Award.

Swinney, is also set to earn a retention bonus of $1 million if he remains the head coach through March 1. Venables is set to earn a retention bonus of $200,000.
