Duke Basketball Reportedly Schedules Another In-State Opponent

Going off announcement dates last year, the Duke basketball program will likely release its official 2023-24 non-conference schedule later this month. Then the dates for the ACC battles — home and away opponents are already known from the conference's scheduling matrix — probably won't come out until September.

But reports have trickled in the past few months. And now, based on those, only one unknown matchup remains for the Blue Devils among their schedule's 11 non-conference slots.

The latest such report appeared on Monday. According to tweets from Agent 49 and expert schedule tracker The D1 Docket, the talent-rich Duke basketball squad will host mid-major Charlotte in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Dec. 9.

Assuming that's the case, the 49ers will be the first of two teams from the Queen City to face head coach Jon Scheyer's second group of Blue Devils in Durham next season. The other, Queens, is slated to come to town on Dec. 29.

Last season, Charlotte finished 22-14 overall and 9-11 in Conference USA play (fifth in the standings) under fifth-year head coach Ron Sanchez.

However, in June, Sanchez stepped down and joined the staff at Virginia. So next season, the 49ers will have a new leader in interim head coach Aaron Fearne.

Duke leads the all-time series against Charlotte, 3-0. Their most recent meeting was in November 2009, a 101-59 blowout home win by then-senior guard Jon Scheyer and the eventual national champion Blue Devils.

As for the final unknown on Duke basketball's non-conference schedule, chances are the opponent, whoever it may be, will serve as the season opener in Cameron and as a tune-up a few days before the showdown against Arizona in Durham on Nov. 10.
