Which true freshmen played for Duke

Coach David Cutcliffe knew that the opening game against Alabama would be a learning experience for his team, so he made sure to bring his youngest students.

"We brought all our scholarship freshmen," Cutcliffe said, "whether they were going to play or not, to experience this atmosphere."

He ended up using a good number of them. Ten true freshmen saw playing time in the opener.

Here's a look at who played and who didn't. We'll keep track of which freshmen exceed the four-game redshirt limit all season long.

Played:

Jalon Calhoun: Started at WR and had one catch for two yards. He was also targeted on a pass broken up in the end zone that would have given Duke the lead. Played: 1, Games remaining in redshirt: 3

Jacob Monk: Started at RT (63 above, blocking). He had two penalties--one for a false start (along with several other linemen, but he was the one named) and one for a chop block (with Rak Chambers). Cutcliffe didn't simplify things for him, having him pull on several plays and not giving him much help in blocking the Crimson Tide line. Played: 1, Remaining : 3

DeWayne Carter: Played at end, picking up a tackle in the fourth quarter. Played: 1, Remaining : 3

Jalen Alexander: Was in on the opening kickoff. Played at safety late, picking up a fourth quarter tackle. Played: 1, Remaining 3.

Eli Pancol: Played 1, Remaining 3

Jordan Waters: Played 1, Remaining 3

Isaiah Kemp: Played 1, Remaining 3

Mason Russell: Played 1, Remaining 3

John Gelotte: Played 1, Remaining 3

RJ Oben: Played 1, Remaining 3

The following true freshmen did not play and still have a four-game redshirt intact:
