David Cutcliffe: I don't want Quentin Harris to run as much as he is right now

Coach David Cutcliffe was asked if he planned to run Quentin Harris on Friday night, to take advantage of Virginia Tech’s trouble defending mobile quarterbacks.

“Unless you’ve got some special people up front, mobile quarterbacks cause everyone problems,” Coach Cut said. “The last few years, we’ve had mobile quarterbacks, first with Daniel (Jones) and now Quentin. Quentin’s got great vision. He picks his times to run. I just don’t want him to run as much as he is right now, if he can help that. Only if it’s a touchdown.”

Cutcliffe wasn’t overly concerned with Duke’s early penalties.

“The roughing the passer was just a very untimely thing for Derrick Tangelo,” he said. “The guy’s throwing. His hands go up. When you come down—you jump—you try not to leave your feet—he just came down near the guy’s head. It wasn’t a horrible roughing. It wasn’t an undisciplined play. Michael Carter got called on a tight coverage (for DPI). It happens. I taked to the officials, ‘Hey. That’s fine. We just need to know we’ll see it both ways.’ Offside penalties, I don’t care much for. We settled down, but they were not discipline issues. I’m not going to run in there and give a bunch of lessons to guys, because they don’t need it in that circumstance.”

The 72-yard pass play that resulted in Virginia Tech’s only touchdown also wasn’t a major concern.

“We covered them in the back end,” he said. “The one play, we were in man coverage. They went to a cluster and one of them popped out free. Our coaches were going a lleitt crazy. ‘Okay. It happens.’ We settled in, played a little less man and made sure to make them go the long way.”
