Duke offers Monkell Goodwine: Film breakdown

Duke offered a scholarship to Monkell Goodwine earlier this week.
Goodwine is a four-star defensive end in the class of 2021. He’s rated the No. 113 prospect in the class and No. 8 at strongside defensive end by 247Sports and significantly higher—No. 26 and No. 3—by Rivals.
Playing for Fort Washington, MD’s National Christian Academy, Goodwine has picked up offers from the best programs in the nation, including Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
It’s easy to see why everyone is interested in Goodwine. He’s 6-foot-4, 265 pounds, but his speed is game changing.
In one clip on the highlight reel, Goodwine lines up at right end,
then changes direction on the snap to make the tackle on a wide-receiver screen by the sideline.
In another, he is about to sack the quarterback
when a dump-off pass sends the ball to a running back. Goodwine follows the ball and makes the tackle in the backfield.
Goodwine uses his speed to pursue from behind and seems to accelerate when he gets the target in his sights.
He also has speed in a phone booth, managing to get off blocks or avoid blockers altogether by shifting and moving around them at the line.
There were several tackles for loss in the highlight reel where he was able to slip through the line while lined up at defensive tackle. That’s not likely to work at the college level, but his quickness will be an asset regardless.
Goodwine is also an excellent tackler. If he gets his hands on the ballcarrier, at least in the plays chosen for the highlights, he doesn’t let go.
His highlights don’t show a wide variety of pass-rushing moves, nor does it show him taking advantage of his size to overpower blockers. Both of those will need to improve at the next level.
Will Duke be able to land him? The Blue Devils’ offer is the latest of nearly two dozen, and coach David Cutcliffe will be going against the best in the business.
