Duke overwhelms Virginia Tech, 45-10

The Duke Blue Devils posted a 45-10 blowout of the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg on Friday night.

The win gave Duke a leg up in the Coastal Division and was also the third of the season for the Blue Devils, bringing them halfway to bowl eligibility.

Duke started off slowly on offense. At the end of the first quarter, Duke had run eight plays, with five going for zero or negative yards, and another two gaining one yard each.

The Blue Devils were buoyed by their defense, which kept the Hokies offense from moving the ball as well.

Duke’s D also provided the breakthrough the Blue Devils offense needed, recovering a fumble in the Virginia Tech red zone. Quentin Harris passed 16 yards to tight end Noah Gray for a touchdown on the next play. Harris found Gray for another touchdown later in the second quarter.

Wide receiver Jalon Cahoun, also threw a touchdown in the second quarter in a trick play David Cutcliffe has promised to use in the near future. Calhoun, a high school quarterback, threw 25 yards to RB Deon Jackson.

Jackson also scored on a 32 yard run, and Harris had a 42 yard scoring run on his way to 100 rushing yards on the night.

Harris finished 20 of 27 for 163 yards, with 100 rushing yards on 17 carries. Jackson had 55 rushing yards on nine carries.

The Duke defense held Virginia Tech to 8 of 20 passing for 120 yards, a performance earning boos from the home fans.

It was Duke’s biggest ACC road win since the 1989 regular season finale over the Tar Heels in Steve Spurrier’s final season as coach. It was Duke’s biggest win over the Hokies since 1951.
